Find Balance. Feel Beautiful.
Where do the Style Network, HGTV, and Discovery Channel meet? Live Well Network.
The popular digital channel, now streaming in 73 percent of the country, is the brainchild of former ABC7 News President and General Manager Emily Barr. She credits the inspiration for the network to Oprah Winfrey’s philosophy, ‘Live Your Best Life.’
“Oprah’s brand was she wanted everybody to live their best life,” she says. “And if you remember, Oprah was very big into this. Women should take time for themselves and they should do this and do that. Sounds great when you’re not working and trying to raise kids, but it’s kind of hard otherwise.”
Barr feels women, who are television’s largest demographic audience, need programs for home, health, and lifestyle tips. As a working mom herself, she saw an opportunity to help out fellow mothers.
“You definitely have days where your children kind of bring you to your knees,” she admits. “Work seems easy and predictable compared, sometimes, to your kids. So sometimes it works out, sometimes it’s hard.”
When it’s hard, she says, is when she hopes women can turn to Live Well Network. The online channel features shows like “Mirror, Mirror” for quick beauty regimens and style tips. Other programs like “Knock It Off!” offer home design on a budget, while a variety of cooking shows, including “Let’s Dish,” suggest a range of recipes -- from Chilean to Thai, and more.

As the current President and CEO of Post-Newsweek Stations in Chicago, Barr also travels a lot for business and understands a lifestyle that’s on the go.
Her secret to making it all work?
“I have a great husband, so I have to give him his due cause he’s been hugely important in juggling all of this,” she chuckles. “I’ve had the usual ups and downs at work, things that have not gone well and make you question whether you’re doing the right thing ... My advice to anybody -- find something for which you have a passion and then go after that, whatever that is.”
And if things don’t turn out as expected?
Live Well Network has some great dessert and drink recipes.
